A 73-year-old Taylor man is in serious condition following an exchange of gunfire with police on Monday, as confirmed by Michigan State Police. The incident unfolded in the 11000 block of Polk Street when officers responded to reports of shots being fired, leading to a standoff with the armed man who was eventually shot by an officer and hospitalized due to a gunshot wound to his abdomen, The Detroit News reported.
No officers were injured during the confrontation which began around 2 p.m.; it escalated when the man, armed with a shotgun, fired at the police and retreated into his home, later surrendering after several hours of negotiations involving a special tactics team and crisis negotiators, FOX 2 Detroit disclosed details of these events.
The backstory to the violent altercation appears rooted in a months-long community dispute, as neighbors had expressed ongoing concerns about the man's aggressive dogs, which roamed freely, instilling fear in the area. The situation reached a critical point last spring when the man's dogs allegedly attacked a neighbor's pet, resulting in significant injuries. Despite a court-ordered removal of the dogs, compliance was not observed until the day of the standoff, according to FOX 2 Detroit
Residents recall the man's erratic behavior, with one neighbor, Vanessa Thibodeau, stating, "From my experience, you could approach him, and he was pretty violent," Sheila Baker, another neighbor, shared her ordeal of taking cover with her border collie for hours during the standoff, she also mentioned her worries about the man's return, "I've been worried and living with such fear for so long –I'm not relieved yet, because I don't know– is he coming back?" FOX 2 Detroit conveyed Baker's sentiments.
Meanwhile, ClickOnDetroit affirmed that the elderly gunman is now in critical condition, as the Second District Special Investigations Section of the MSP carries onward with the probe into the shooting incident.
