Voter cards are on the march in Texas and North Carolina, signaling the approach of election season. Coming soon to Bexar County mailboxes, more than 1.2 million voter registration cards will start appearing, as confirmed by the Bexar County Elections Department. Residents are advised to keep an eye out for the yellow cards that will remain valid through 2025.

The importance of these cards is not just a reminder to participate in the democratic process, but also a crucial tool for confirming voting details. In a similar move, Buncombe County Election Services in North Carolina has also begun distributing their own fleet of voter cards to their active voters, which will be mailed out starting in mid-January. These will include vital information, as reported by Mountain Xpress, like the voter's name and address, Election Day voting location, election districts, and political party affiliation.

The Bexar County's effort is meant to simplify the process for voters, with the department reminding people to sign their cards as soon as they get them. On the eastern side, North Carolinians who do not receive their card by post are encouraged by Buncombe County Election Services to check their voter status online, ensuring their registration information is up-to-date. Additionally, changes to voter registration, including address and party affiliation, need to be made by Feb. 9.

Election Services also wants people to be in the know about new rules affecting the vote this year. Voter identification requirements have been updated, and citizens will be asked to present a valid photo ID when voting in person. Those without a valid photo ID can still cast their vote if they complete an affidavit declaring a reasonable impediment to obtaining one. The ExpressVote ballot marking machines, which have been authorized for use in 2023, will also be available at all Early Voting locations in Buncombe County in 2024. Previously there was a grace period, but now the deadline to return completed domestic absentee ballots is Election Day, which is March 5.

For those eager to get ahead of the game, absentee ballots can be requested from Jan. 1, with the mail-out of the ballots beginning on Jan. 19. Key dates including the start of Early Voting from Feb. 15 to March 2 and the Primary Election on March 5 must be marked on every voter's calendar. Bexar and Buncombe counties are doing their part to ensure every voice has a chance to be heard, with the ultimate culmination of democracy's call set for the ballots in March. Residents can also sign up for election reminders via text or email, streamlining the voting process in this modern era.
