Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas fired a salvo in defense of the Lone Star State's right to self-defense, citing constitutional provisions as the Biden administration faces criticism for its immigration policies. In a bold statement, Abbott accentuated Texas' autonomy to safeguard its people amidst what he deems an abdication by the federal government to effectively police the border.
"The Executive Branch of the United States has a constitutional duty to enforce federal laws protecting States, including immigration laws on the books right now," Abbott declared, framing the issue as a dereliction of federal responsibility. His interpretation of the Constitution suggests that when the federal government falters, a state has the right to step in. According to the statement, "President Biden has instructed his agencies to ignore federal statutes that mandate the detention of illegal immigrants." As the Commander in Chief, Biden's posture on immigration has frequently placed him at odds with the GOP governors.

In invoking Article I, § 10, Clause 3 of the U.S. Constitution, Abbott asserts Texas's entitlement to act in self-defense against what he labels as an "invasion." Furthermore, he challenges the precedence of federal statutes, claiming the state's authority is "the supreme law of the land and supersedes any federal statutes to the contrary."
While Abbott's stance is seen by supporters as a necessary step in reasserting Texas's security, critics decry the move as a political power play amid a complex debate over the balance of power between state and federal governments.
