President Joe Biden has extended a personal invitation to Kate Cox, a 31-year-old mother from Texas embroiled in an abortion rights controversy, to attend the upcoming State of the Union address. Cox recently took her struggle against Texas' stringent abortion laws to the state's highest court, and while she ultimately had to leave the state to obtain an abortion, her case has continued to draw national attentio, as reported by KVUE.
A statement from White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, the Bidens held a private conversation with Cox, acknowledging her "courage in sharing her story and speaking out about the impact of the extreme abortion ban in Texas." Jean-Pierre emphasized the power and devastation of Cox's narrative, as per Abc News.
At the heart of Kate Cox’s legal battle was a pregnancy diagnosed with trisomy 18, a condition deemed incompatible with sustained life. Faced with the potential loss of her uterus due to Texas' abortion restrictions, Cox had to weigh the serious risks posed by going through with her pregnancy. Despite Cox’s grave health concerns, the Texas Supreme Court denied her the right to terminate her pregnancy, precipitating her decision to seek care out of state, according to Abc News.
Amidst the backdrop of a contentious election year, the invitation extended to Cox by the White House symbolizes the administration’s stance on reproductive rights as a rallying point for voters. The First Lady, Jill Biden, will host Cox during the address, as noted by KVUE.
