Getting from A to B in Texas is about to notably dent wallets as toll rates across the State of Texas are on the rise. Commuters in Central Texas will need to fork out more for their daily travels, according to a report from KVUE. The increased tolls will affect several main thoroughfares in the Austin area, including U.S. 183 and other key highways, where rates are set to climb by nearly 4%. This increment will leave drivers paying an additional 2 to 5 cents per journey, a bump attributed to keeping pace with inflation.
Similarly, North Texans won't escape the rising cost of convenience, as the North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) announced toll rates per mile will inch up starting July 1. "This increase in toll rates will help NTTA repay $9.5 billion borrowed to construct our system of safe, clean and convenient toll roads," NTTA Board Chair Marcus Knight explained, as per a Community Impact article. Rates are set to quickly jump from $0.20 to $0.21 per mile, with the hike set to additionally fund the expansion of the Dallas North Tollway.
Texans who have embraced the convenience of electronic tags will continue to see some relief, as these tags generally halve the cost compared to the pay-by-mail option. Despite the increase, electronic tag users on the MoPac express lanes in Central Texas are looking at a 7-cent rise to the base cost of a short trip, with a full-length journey costing an additional 14 cents. This is markedly less than the costs shouldered by drivers using the more traditional pay-by-mail system.
Frisco's demand for equitable financial treatment among drivers has led the NTTA to double the rate for those using the pay-by-mail ZipCash method, starting July 1, a penalty of sorts meant to offset collection costs. Monthly expenses for the most regular TollTag users are projected to climb roughly $5.60, due to the seemingly small increment. Nevertheless, the recurring adjustments, part of the NTTA's biennial update to rates, promise to steadily elevate the taxpayer's burden for accessing the state's arteries of commerce and community.
