In the wee hours of Monday morning, a residential area on San Antonio's North Side was disrupted by a gas leak that sent two individuals to the hospital. The San Antonio Fire Department responded to the incident at a five-unit condominium complex located at the 7800 block of Broadway, south of Sunset Road, around 2:45 a.m., as reported by KENS 5.
The source of the leak was traced to a gas furnace. Both victims were taken to a local hospital following exposure to the fumes, their current conditions have not yet been disclosed. Despite the alarming meter reading, which registered over 600, officials acted promptly to ensure residents' safety by evacuating all units amid the season's freezing temperatures. According to the Fire Department, the residents have found alternate accommodations.
KSAT conveyed crucial safety advice from CPS Energy: in the event of a gas odor, individuals should vacate their homes immediately, avoiding the use of electrical switches or phones, as an electric spark or static could set off an explosion. The gas supply to the building was cut off as a precautionary measure, and CPS Energy was called to the scene to manage the aftermath of this potentially dangerous leak.
Meanwhile, Firefighters emphasized the importance of vigilance regarding gas leaks, instructing residents to open windows and doors and to use a fan to draw fresh air into a house if they suspect a leak. Urging people to be cautious, the officials advise calling 311 to request smoke and possibly CO2 alarms if needed.
