Two individuals in Newton, Massachusetts faced a brush with tragedy yesterday night when a house fire inflicted serious injuries on both of them. According to NBC Boston, the blaze erupted around 8:30 p.m. on Lincoln Road. Firefighters were able to rescue one person from the basement and another from the first floor under challenging conditions. Both victims suffered from smoke inhalation and burns and they currently remain in serious condition.
"Pretty tough conditions, zero visibility with a lot of heat," as Newton Fire Chief Greg Gentile said, confirming the severe nature of the scene. Firefighters, once arrived, rushed into the engulfed home and conducted what was described by Gentile as a "pretty aggressive and quick rescue." This statement, crawling with zero visibility, was obtained by NBC Boston.
While the precise origins of the fire are under ongoing investigation, the Newton Fire Chief mentioned that the fire seems to have sparked in the basement. In a report provided by CBS Boston, Gentile noted that it was not believed to be suspicious. Further details about the ages or identities of the victims have not yet been released to the public. Both were taken to Boston hospitals where they are being treated for their injuries.
Amidst the smoke and flames that ravaged the residence at 16 Lincoln Road, rescuers faced harrowing conditions. "We had four companies all together involved in the rescue operation, and they were able to pretty quickly pull those victims out," as Gentile said. Firefighters, fighting hopelessly against time and a roaring inferno to save lives, were hailed for their bravery and quick action.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are still underway as authorities and the community seek answers to this distressing incident. The swift actions of the Newton firefighters have, at least for now, prevented this fire from claiming any lives, underscoring the relentless nature of firefighters' commitment to their duty even on the darkest of nights.
