The search for a missing UMass Dartmouth student-athlete came to a heartbreaking conclusion on Tuesday, as university officials confirmed that 21-year-old Flordan "Flo" Bazile was found dead following a comprehensive search by authorities on the ground and in the waters near the campus.
Bazile, who was last spotted on Monday at 2 a.m. in Pine Dale Hall dormitories at UMass Dartmouth, had been the subject of an urgent search before being found deceased in Fairhaven, Massachusetts, despite the tragic outcome no further details regarding the circumstances of his death have been disclosed by police as of yet, this according to Boston 25 News.
In a statement obtained by Boston 25 News, UMass Dartmouth Chancellor Mark Fuller expressed his profound sorrow, acknowledging the loss of a student who not only excelled in academia within the Charlton College of Business but whose athletic prowess as a track and field team member and record-setting sprinter had earned him acclaim as the Little East Conference Track Athlete and Rookie Athlete of the Week for consecutive weeks.
"His coaches and teammates described Flo as hard-working, energetic, a champion, and a great friend," said Fuller about Bazile, who has been remembered for his robust contributions to UMass Dartmouth both on and off the field, his death though lamented by many is yet shrouded in mystery as authorities keep mum on the cause.
Additional support services have been made available to students and faculty grieving Bazile's untimely passing. The UMass Dartmouth Counseling Center will remain open weekdays and a Support Help Line is accessible for after-hours assistance; moreover, pastoral counseling is offered by the Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, according to statements from the school.
Reflecting further on Bazile's impact, NBC affiliate WJAR reported that prosecutors with the Bristol County District Attorney's Office have indicated the death appears to be by suicide, a detail adding to the weight of the community's mourning. NBC Boston mentions Bazile's status as a record holder for the 100-meter dash at UMass Dartmouth, cementing his legacy as an outstanding athlete.
Plans to honor Bazile's memory and celebrate his life at the university will be announced shortly, whilst faculty and staff have also been encouraged to connect with the Employee Assistance Program for support during this difficult period, the details of which have been shared by University officials.
