Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids is teeing off in an unusual season for Minnesotan sports enthusiasts. The driving range cracked open last Friday, while golfers were able to enjoy the executive course shortly after; and now, just in time for the last day of January, the championship course is swinging into action.
Despite a chill still in the air, with the thermostats hitting just shy of the 50-degree mark, locals couldn't wait to hit the links. Busting out their clubs in what's typically a snow-covered no-go for golf, they are filling up tee times faster than a hole-in-one disappears off the green. Bunker Hills Director Tim Anderson admitted to the course's website, “I've never seen this type of activity in January/February." And sure enough, the books are near bursting for the stretch running January 31 through February 5.
The current golf scenario is not a typical winter event. The weather conditions have been favorable, resulting in a dry turf, perfect for golf swings and the movement of golf carts. This unusual occurrence is attributed to the sand-based splendor of the course. The management has noted the opportunity afforded by this scenario for winter golf.
It is anticipated that the Bunker Hills greenery will remain open to the public. Golf enthusiasts who are making use of the season's unique weather conditions are hopeful that the moderate temperatures will persist, allowing them to continue to enjoy winter birdies and eagles, with golf clubs that are typically not utilized until the spring thaw. The course's director has confirmed that if the bunkers remain snow-free, they will remain open to golfers who seek refuge from the cold weather.
