In a move eagerly awaited by ice fishing enthusiasts, Upper Red Lake in northern Minnesota will reopen for motorized vehicles starting at daybreak on January 10. An order that had initially limited vehicular access on Upper Red Lake beginning December 30, 2023, was lifted after conditions were deemed to have improved by local authorities, according to a report by Northern News Now.
The restrictions were put in place due to a series of dangerous incidents where anglers found themselves stranded on drifting ice flows. Issued by the Beltrami County Sheriff's Office, the order followed an especially harrowing rescue on December 29, where over 100 people were saved from an ice chunk. Since the imposition of the restriction, aerial and ground assessments have been conducted frequently to monitor the ice's stability. The Sheriff's office and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) used these observations to finally decide to safely lift the ban.
According to a statement obtained by FOX 9, Beltrami County Sheriff Jason Riggs said, "Imposing restrictions on Upper Red Lake was not an easy decision, it impacted many people and their livelihoods as well as inconvenienced those who wanted to enjoy fishing on the lake." Riggs further noted, "Those inconveniences proved to be necessary in the interest of public safety due to the number of ice rescues and people becoming stranded."
Despite the lift of the restrictions, the DNR continues to urge caution, advising that no ice surface can be considered entirely secure. Resort operators, Kelliher Fire and Rescue, Red Lake Nation, and other involved agents are striving to ensure to keep monitoring the ice conditions. The DNR also specifies the recommended ice thickness for various types of traffic, ranging from 4 inches for walking to more than 20 inches for heavy-duty trucks and wheelhouses.
As the community gears up to resume their winter activities on Upper Red Lake, authorities are stressing that the lifted vehicle restrictions do not serve as a guarantee for safety. Anglers and visitors are encouraged to regularly check the ice's thickness and quality and to heed the advice of local experts. These safety measures are intended to prevent any further distressing incidents and ensure that the joys of ice fishing can be experienced without undue risk.
