A high-speed chase through the streets of Victorville ended with a man behind bars on charges of kidnapping, vehicle embezzlement, and evading arrest early this morning. Harvey Gobert, a 41-year-old resident of the area, was arrested after Deputy C. Cassidy of the Victorville Police spotted him speeding in an SUV reported as stolen from a local rental car business.
The pursuit began when the deputy attempted to stop the SUV near the intersection of Little Beaver Street and Magnolia Avenue around 2:31 a.m., but Gobert failed to comply leading to a chase involving reckless driving through the Casa Bella apartment complex, where the vehicle was seen moving at speeds exceeding 40 mph, and where a female passenger signaled distress through the window. During the chase, the passenger indicated that she needed help because she was being kidnapped, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner Department.
Subsequently, Gobert and his passenger, whose name has not been disclosed, exited the vehicle, initiating a foot pursuit that ended with both individuals being detained by police. Gobert faces multiple charges, including felony reckless evading (V.C 2800.2(A)), kidnapping (P.C. 207(A)), embezzlement of a rented vehicle (V.C. 10855), and an existing felony warrant for threatening to commit a crime (P.C. 422(A)); he was booked at the High Desert Detention Center in Adelanto.
The Victorville Police Department has called for the public's assistance in gathering more information about the incident, urging individuals with any knowledge to come forward and contact the police station or Sheriff’s Dispatch, with the option to remain anonymous through the We-Tip hotline or its website.
