Residents of Carverdale are breathing easier after the controversial plan to expand the Hawthorn Park landfill was trashed. Mayor John Whitmire cheered alongside locals when USA Waste of Texas Landfills, Inc. declared they would not seek to supersize the waste site after all.
In a win for the community that opposed the landfill’s growth citing health hazards and infrastructural stress, Whitmire stated, "Today's news that USA Waste of Texas Landfills, Inc. has withdrawn its application to expand the Hawthorn Park Landfill is a victory for one of our most vulnerable neighborhoods." These comments came via an official statement released yesterday by the City of Houston Mayor's Office of Communication.
Whitmire's opposition to the expansion goes back to his days as a state senator in 2022. He rallied with the concerned residents and business owners to confront the environmental, congestion, and flooding issues that loomed over the plan.
Adding weight to the opposition, Houston City Council Member Amy Peck was commended by Whitmire for her "leadership and commitment to stopping the landfill expansion." Peck’s collaboration was essential, as Whitmire expressed a promise "to continue fighting for Houstonians whenever their quality of life is threatened," as stated in Mayor Whitmire's statement.
