Officers stayed on scene until shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday, working to piece together what happened outside the restaurant, a popular hangout for students and staff along the 4600 block of Rolfe Christopher Drive.
Beaumont police are investigating the reported shooting at Dorothy's Bar & Grill, according to KFDM, and said they are still checking suspect information, the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and whether anyone was hit. An identification unit was called to the scene to assist with the investigation, the station reported. Photojournalist Bart Masters shared video showing a number of officers gathered at the location, and officers could be seen placing several yellow evidence markers on the ground in the parking lot outside the restaurant's front door.
A Restaurant Tucked Against Campus
Dorothy's Bar & Grill sits at 4637 Rolfe Christopher Drive, a soul food and American-fare spot that has become a regular stop for people connected to the university, according to the Beaumont CVB. The 4600 block of that street runs directly against Lamar University property, including facilities like the Department of Industrial Engineering, per mapping data from Maptons. That proximity means any violent incident along the corridor tends to draw attention from both city police and the university's own police force.
This isn't the first time crime near campus has prompted a heightened security response. Back in April 2024, Lamar University Police stepped up patrols near campus after a string of off-campus incidents, including helping Beaumont police respond to a robbery at a nearby Subway and a threat made by a student on campus, KBMT reported at the time. The university also maintains an institutional Threat Assessment Workgroup, made up of administrators, student engagement officials, and Lamar Police Department personnel, tasked with evaluating and responding to credible security risks, according to the university's own police services page.

When calls like this one come in, Beaumont police can lean on the department's Real-Time Crime Center, which stitches together citywide camera feeds and other intelligence to help officers respond quickly to active shooting investigations. It's unclear whether that resource is being tapped in the Dorothy's Bar & Grill case, since police have not detailed their investigative approach beyond confirming they are checking suspect information and the circumstances of the shooting.
The incident also lands amid a broader regional push against violent crime. The Southeast Texas Violent Crime Task Force, a multi-agency effort involving local and federal partners, has been running crime suppression operations across Beaumont targeting high-crime areas identified through intelligence and public complaints, The Examiner reported in August.

On campus, Lamar University reported 82 overall crime and safety incidents in 2024, a rate of about 4.61 incidents per 1,000 students, according to safety metrics compiled by College Factual from federal disclosures. The Dorothy's Bar & Grill shooting adds to a string of recent violent incidents Hoodline has tracked across Beaumont, including a gun-involved robbery reported earlier this month and a shooting on Magnolia Street in late August. As of Sunday morning, Beaumont police had not released information identifying any victims or suspects in the Dorothy's Bar & Grill case.
