As the Minnesota Vikings face a critical off-season, GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah confirmed that keeping quarterback Kirk Cousins in the fold is a priority, in a statement obtained by CBS News Minnesota. With Cousins' contract due to expire in March, Adofo-Mensah expressed his intentions: "It's certainly my intention to have him back here." The stakes are high for a team wanting to maintain its competitive edge, with Cousins at the helm of their offense.
Adofo-Mensah further noted the significance of the quarterback role, acknowledging that the Vikings need to plan for both the present and the future. "Ultimately it always comes down to can you find an agreement that works for both sides and all those things, but as a player, it's certainly my intention to have him back here," he told CBS News Minnesota. This approach might also include finding a successor in the upcoming draft, as the team holds the 11th overall pick.
The Vikings' GM underscored the importance of the upcoming months in an interview with The Washington Post, admitting that a significant off-season lies ahead: "It’s going to take a big offseason. That’s why we’re going to be here a lot." There's also a focus on securing star wide receiver Justin Jefferson's future with an extension, with Adofo-Mensah striking an optimistic tone about those negotiations.
While the leadership duo of Adofo-Mensah and coach Kevin O'Connell recognizes the need to reinforce the Vikings' roster, addressing Cousins' situation remains central. The player has indicated a preference for continuity, saying he's "not out to force a bidding contest and break the bank," according to a conversation with CBS News Minnesota. Yet, the GM also has to balance fiscal responsibility, aiming to "measure it the best we can to protect ourselves and insure against it" when it comes to Cousins' future with the team. The Vikings also look to address other contracts and team gaps, envisioning an off-season of building blocks toward long-term success.
