In Weatherford, Texas, a heroic K-9 officer named Jack was awarded a Purple Heart medal for injuries sustained in the line of duty. The canine partner was shot in the ear and paw while Weatherford police and Parker County deputies were to serve a warrant in November 2023. The situation escalated rapidly, resulting in a shootout that led to the suspect's death by return fire from the officers, according to WFAA.
K-9 Jack's bravery was formally recognized at a city council meeting on Tuesday, where he was adorned with the prestigious medal. Police Chief Lance Arnold highlighted Jack's courageous actions: "On that evening, Jack very selflessly, with bravery and purpose, put himself between the fugitive and officers. There is no question in my mind that Jack's actions that night prevented further harm to our officers and those that were there", as per FOX 7 Austin.
Post-recuperation at I-20 Animal Hospital, K-9 Jack has since made a full recovery and rejoined the force. The Tuesday evening ceremony wasn't just about the Purple Heart, he also received a bounty of dog-friendly goodies. Mayor Paul Paschall and city council members presented Jack with a festive basket replete with treats, chew toys, and his favored snack, squirt cheese.
