A 12-year-old girl tragically lost her life when she was ejected from a vehicle during a horrific crash in Harris County, authorities confirmed. The accident occurred late yesterday night on State Highway 99 as the family was returning from a weekend trip to San Antonio, indicated the FOX 26 Houston report.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office stated that the driver, a 36-year-old woman named Rangel-Ramos, went off the road, collided with a cable barrier, and her vehicle began to roll, with the 12-year-old, identified as Camila, who was not restrained at the time of the crash, according to a Click2Houston article, being ejected and pronounced dead at the scene, in this tragic incident, the other passengers including the driver's 56-year-old mother and children aged 1, 3, and 16, were also taken to the hospital where the 16-year-old was being treated for a broken clavicle, however, aside from the fatality and the teen's injury it appears the remaining individuals sustained no serious injuries.
The family, from Conroe, was in the 7700 block of SH-99 when the crash unfolded prompting an investigation by HCSO Vehicular Crimes Unit, with officials noting that Rangel-Ramos has been cooperative and showed no signs of intoxication at the time of the crash. All lanes of the highway have been reopened since the accident, though the repercussions of the night's loss ripple through the community.
While officials have not currently indicated if charges will be brought against the aunt responsible for the vehicle during the incident, the investigation is ongoing. The aftermath of such events seldom captures the entirety of grief the family endures, or the debate over the obligations of kinship in tragedy, yet for the broader public, the details as noted serve as a cautionary tale, a ledger entry in the toll of the road.
