An 8-year-old girl was critically injured after being hit by a car in Henry County while trying to board a school bus, officials say. The accident occurred on Jackson Lake Road at the juncture of the child's driveway according to a report by FOX 5 Atlanta. The Georgia State Patrol, assisting in the investigation, has reported that the child was attempting to cross the road to get on the bus, which had its red flashing lights on and stop sign out.
Hit by a Ford Fusion, the girl was flown to Egleston Children's Hospital in Atlanta with life-threatening injuries. The driver, a 25-year-old woman seemed to have ignored the bus's signals and hit the child, as she was crossing the road, who was last listed in critical condition. Despite being stopped with activated stop sign and lights, the bus was witnessing the horrific scene, underlining the dangers of inattentive driving. 11Alive added that the woman remained at the scene after the collision.
Medical personnel arriving at the accident site performed "life-saving measures" on the young girl prior to her being airlifted to the hospital. While the Georgia State Patrol hasn't released details regarding any arrest, they did confirm that the driver stayed on the scene following the traumatic incident. The exact condition of the 8-year-old or the long-term impact of her injuries remains unknown.
