An afternoon squabble over food in Athens devolved into gunfire Thursday, leaving one man wounded at a local bus stop, as per the Athens police. The Athens-Clarke County Police Department said that the argument began in an apartment and surged to violence after moving to the bus stop on the 1000 block of Lakeside Drive. The victim, found shot in the leg, was swiftly carted to a hospital and is slated for recovery.
Authorities responding to the incident near 3:30 p.m. discovered the unnamed victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper thigh. Not long after the shooting, at the bus stop officers arrested Douglas Barnett, 25, from Athens, charging him with aggravated assault, according to FOX5 Atlanta and Atlanta News First.
The nature of the disagreement that led to shooting remains not entirely clear.
While medical personnel responded to the victim whose identity remains shielded, police officers at the scene applied a tourniquet to the victim's leg, a move potentially pivotal in stanching blood flow and saving life, Atlanta News First reports. Barnett, linked to the violent outburst, now sits behind bars in Clarke County Jail; his bond had yet to be set.
