A gang member's reign of terror behind bars came to a halt as he was convicted of assaulting a federal correctional officer. Cody Ryan Todd, already facing a racketeering rap for the gamut of his gang's crimes, added to his rap sheet with a violent attack on a guard at USP Atlanta.

U.S. Attorney Ryan K. Buchanan minced no words when he addressed the verdict, stating“Detainees and inmates cannot commit crimes with impunity while they are behind bars,” He lauded the correctional officers for ensuring the safety of both staff and inmates and affirmed that attacks against them would not stand. The guilty verdict sends a clear signal to those daring to challenge authority within prison walls.

According to statements from officials, including FBI Special Agent Keri Farley, Todd's deliberate assault on the officer underscores the daily risks faced by those tasked with maintaining order in prisons. “The FBI will not tolerate such attacks against members of law enforcement, and Todd will now face further consequences for his actions.” Farley said in a statement obtained by the Department of Justice.

In the January 2021 incident, Todd reportedly struck the officer in the face, knocking them to the ground before continuing the assault, which resulted in significant injuries. This attack added to Todd's extensive criminal history, which includes a recent 16-year sentence for conspiracy to commit racketeering and four separate battery convictions. He is now scheduled for sentencing on these latest charges come May 8, 2024.

Investigation of the case was a joint effort between the FBI and the Bureau of Prisons. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Richard Beaulieu and Alison Prout lead the prosecution. More information on this case can be found by contacting the U.S. Attorney’s Public Affairs Office or visiting their website. T
