After a relentless four-month investigation, Atlanta police have finally apprehended a man accused of a brutal stabbing that claimed the life of a 20-year-old who intervened during a car break-in. Landon Gibson, 36, the alleged perpetrator, was arrested on Feb. 1, on Marco Drive in northwest Atlanta. He is charged with murder, aggravated assault, and entering an automobile after the fatal confrontation on Oct. 4, as FOX5 Atlanta reported.
Chavion Smith, the victim, who was a former college football player, reportedly caught Gibson attempting to illegally enter his vehicle on Flat Shoals Road, a hotspot in East Atlanta Village's nightlife scene. Police say that after an alleged initial attempt to escape, Gibson turned and confronted Smith, stabbing him multiple times. The victim was rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, as per the account from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
Described as a "standout football player" from Statesville, North Carolina, Smith's tragic death has unearthed a well of grief, casting a long shadow over a life that was set to embrace fatherhood — his girlfriend was pregnant and expecting their child at the time he was killed. Their son, to be named after Smith, will now grow up without ever knowing his father.
Gibson's arrest wasn't without its drama; as police converged on the front door of the Lincoln Homes residence, Gibson attempted to quickly exit out the back. But the fugitive unit had already surrounded the house, and he was greeted by armed officers. He was instructed to crawl backward down the steps of a second-story deck, an order he followed, before being taken into custody without further incident. Gibson, who has a history with the law, including a six-year stint in state prison for burglary, is currently denied bond and remains in custody at the DeKalb County jail.
