In the early hours of Sunday morning, tragedy struck the 600 block of West Anderson Lane in Austin, where a passenger, for reasons still unknown, exited a moving vehicle and was subsequently hit by another car. The Austin Police Department responded to the fatal incident at around 4:18 a.m., which claimed the life of the unnamed individual, who was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a statement obtained by the department's news release.
The vehicle involved in the hit-and-run failed to stop, continuing an all-too-common narrative of drivers fleeing the aftermath of their wreckage; the driver of the car from which the victim exited remained at the scene, who was reportedly not impaired and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation. This grim occurrence is marked as Austin's third fatal crash this year, which draws a stark contrast to the 10 fatal crashes by this point in 2023.
While the investigation by APD's Vehicular Homicide unit continues, they urge anyone bearing knowledge of this hit-and-run to come forward. Information can be disclosed anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program, where, as detailed on their website, tips leading to an arrest could yield a reward of up to $1,000.
