Austin has been struck by yet another deadly episode, with the police identifying a suspect in a fatal shooting at a car show last Saturday. The Travis County arrest affidavit names Carlos Rivera, 49, in connection with the murder of Christian Loredo, 20, detailed in a report from KXAN.
Responding to a distress call at approximately 6:25 p.m., police arrived at the 3900 block of North Interstate 35 service road, the same site as the Freestyle Saturday 4th Annual Car Show. They discovered Loredo inside a vehicle, suffering from gunshot wounds, and despite efforts by first responders, he was pronounced dead at 6:40 p.m., the affidavit added. Witnesses at the scene quickly pointed the finger at Rivera as the gunman, while Crime Stoppers tips further supported the link leading to his eventual arrest.
According to CBS Austin, an altercation unfolded during the car club gathering in the Fiesta parking lot where Loredo, caught amid a heated exchange with another group, ended up being shot. In the aftermath, the suspect fled the scene, sparking a manhunt that ended with Rivera's capture.
Police are urging anyone with more information to come forward, promising anonymity for tips received through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program. A potential reward of up to $1,000 is on the table for details leading to an arrest, in an attempt to piece together the events that led to Austin's 8th homicide of the year.
While Rivera remains in the Travis County jail on a $1 million bond, the community, and Loredo's family are left to grapple with the tragic fallout of what should have been a celebration of automotive culture.
