The case involves Bert Allen Mann, a 46-year-old man fatally stabbed during a suspected burglary gone violent in his South Austin home back in 1994. Austin Police will address the public this Thursday at 10 a.m., sharing updates on a case that once shook a neighborhood to its core, KXAN reports.
APD's update comes generations after Mann was discovered by his wife, lying near the front door of their residence on Star Grass Circle, the victim of multiple stab wounds. In the aftermath, police speculated that Mann likely stumbled upon a burglar upon returning home from work. "unusual because he said in most property crimes, the offender would normally flee the scene and not become involved in any kind of confrontation with the homeowner." then APD Lt. David Parkinson said, as stated in a KVUE article. It's a crime scene that not only confounded police but one that also imprinted fear on those living nearby.
The initial investigation entertained the possibility that the suspect fled through the back door, disappearing into the woods behind Mann's home. Neighbors recalled the crime's unsettling timing, as children were typically returning from school and adults from work. APD's Homicide Cold Case/Missing Persons Unit, consisting of seven detectives, and one sergeant has the daunting task of piecing together unsolved mysteries like Mann's case. APD currently has 162 unsolved cases on record, with 30 of those classified as missing persons, according to the information provided by KXAN.
