A somber scene unfolded Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of El Salido Parkway and N FM 620 Road where the driver of an SUV was pronounced dead following a collision with a pickup truck, marking Austin's second traffic fatality of 2024. The Austin Police Department, responding to the scene at approximately 1:54 p.m., found that the driver of the pickup truck and their passenger sustained minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital.
Not intoxicated, the driver of the pickup truck is actively cooperating with the ongoing investigation, according to officials. Bearing the weight of this tragic event, the intersection became a canvas of flashing lights and the hushed tones of first responders, reinforcing the cold tally that traffic fatalities in Austin have now climbed to two for the year. This compares to four fatalities resulting from three fatal crashes by the same date in 2023, as confirmed by the APD.
While the name of the SUV's driver has not been released awaiting notification of next of kin, their death at the scene casts a shadow over the community. The police are appealing for witnesses for any information that might provide clarity to the circumstances surrounding the crash.
As the Austin authorities continue piecing together the details of this fatal crash, citizens bearing any knowledge are encouraged to reach out to the APD's Vehicular Homicide unit at 512-974-8111 or submit tips anonymously through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program.
