Traffic in Beverly Crest endured a major disruption after a large tree fell early Tuesday morning, leading to a shutdown of Coldwater Canyon Drive near Eden Drive. The incident, which occurred around 1 a.m., caused several power lines to topple with it, said ABC7. Thankfully, no injuries were reported despite the potential danger presented by the live wires and the blocked roads.
As morning rushed in with the usual flow of commuters, the road closure resulted in a significant build-up of traffic. Frustrated at the lack of signage warning, drivers like Frank Ayala found themselves ensnared in the backup. "It's pretty backed up... There's no sign that's telling you it's closed. Everybody is coming up slowly until you get to this point and you find out that everything is closed," Ayala told ABC7. Some motorists, clearly ignoring the closures, braved the passage beyond the caution tape, risking collisions with the downed tree.
The Los Angeles Fire Department had responded to the scene around midnight, followed by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power which endeavored to secure the area. According to KTLA, power lines were still live as firefighters arrived and caution tape was hastily put in place to block off the thoroughfare between Shirley Lane and Eden Drive. Video footage captured some drivers dangerously disregarding the taped-off area, with one vehicle almost crashing into the tree remnants.
Efforts to clear the obstruction and restore normalcy to Coldwater Canyon came to a successful conclusion by 10 a.m. when authorities reopened the road to the public, CBS Los Angeles reported. Crews worked diligently to remove the tree and repair the damaged power lines, an operation completed within hours of the morning chaos. Additionally, a nearby stretch of Mulholland Drive in the Studio City area remained closed following damage from a recent storm, hinting at the broader weather-related turmoil facing Southern California.
