President Joe Biden's administration announced on Wednesday a move that will wipe out 1.2 billion dollars in student debt for approximately 153,000 borrowers. This is the debut round of forgiveness under the new Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) repayment plan, a significant shift from the previous 20 to 25-year forgiveness timeline. Eligible individuals have been participating in the SAVE plan and have been paying on their loans for at least 10 years. Additionally, the forgiven amount applies to those who originally borrowed $12,000 or less for college, according to Fox10 Phoenix.
The U.S. Department of Education, which located the eligible recipients, stated that the delivery of debt cancellations would begin this week. Borrowers qualifying for the relief should have already received an email directly from President Biden on February 21. The plan is also structured so that those who borrowed more than $12,000 will still see some benefit. Citing the Dept. of Education, for every additional thousand dollars borrowed, borrowers will have to make payments for an extra year to qualify for forgiveness. The Department of Education would soon contact borrowers eligible for early relief who are not yet in the SAVE plan., as per the White House Fact Sheet.
The acceleration of the loan forgiveness timeline was originally scheduled for this coming July but was moved up to provide urgent aid to borrowers. The SAVE plan, launched by Biden in 2023, is hailed for its generous terms and is set to supplant several other income-driven repayment arrangements, per reports from Fox10 Phoenix. The initiative is part of a lengthy commitment by the Biden-Harris administration to facilitate a more accessible path to higher education and alleviate the burden of student loans.
The SAVE plan has already seen significant enrollments, with 7.5 million borrowers participating and over 4 million qualifying for a $0 monthly payment based on income and family size. These measures come amid contrasting efforts by Republicans to challenge President Biden’s fiscal policies. Yet, Biden's administration asserts that their ongoing student debt cancellation has now reached nearly $138 billion for almost 3.9 million American borrowers, setting a presidential record in debt relief, as reported by rThe White House.
