The Boston Police Department made an appearance at Northeastern University's Housing Fair, where they got to engage one-on-one with students hunting for off-campus digs.
The event was more than just about the hunt for housing; it also served as a crash course for students to learn directly from the officers on how to stay safe in the big city. BPD reps dished out practical safety tools like keychain whistles and hand sanitizer, according to an official statement on their website. It was an opportunity to comprehensively chat about personal safety, cycling, and responsibly using ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft.
Alongside BPD, the fair was a meet and greet with other community stakeholders such as the Boston Fire Department and the Inspectional Services Department. They all lined up to offer wisdom and safety tips to future renters, aiming to make their transition to off-campus living a secure and informed one.
It's not every day students get to casually discuss topics like sexual assault and domestic violence prevention with the officers patrolling their neighborhoods. But at the fair, communication channels were wide open.
