In an effort to foster community relations and inspire youth, the Bureau of Community Engagement (BCE) recently organized a field trip for students to get a close-up view of their peer's internship experience with the Boston Police Department (BPD). The visiting group, composed of fifth-year inclusion students from Dorchester's Henderson School, took a trip to BPD Headquarters to see their classmate Brayden's new workplace up close.
The kids weren't just there to catch up with Brayden; they got a first-hand look at the inner workings of the police department's Bureau of Administration and Technology unit, where he's learning the ropes - as part of his internship the curious students got to explore Brayden’s office space and learn about his supportive role within the department, according to Boston Police Department's official news release.
Besides spying out where Brayden spends his nine-to-five, the field trip featured a mini tour of the precinct including visits to specialized units like the Boston Regional Intelligence Center (BRIC) and the Video Evidence Unit which surely gave the youngsters some serious food for thought about the law enforcement world. Along the way, students gained additional insights into career opportunities such as the cadet program, all while rubbing shoulders with the command staff.
It wasn't just a day out of the classroom for these Henderson School students, through this initiative, the BCE is nurturing possible future guardians of the peace by showing kids the ropes, revealing the scope of police work, and opening young minds to careers in law enforcement. "They learned about the cadet program and received insights from our command staff," boasts the Boston Police Department statement, shedding light on a day that proves to be an eye-opener for both the department and the students involved.
