In an initiative to honor Black History Month, officers from Boston's Bureau of Community Engagement (BCE) teamed up with members of the A-1 Community Service Office to make a special visit to the Wang YMCA Early Education Center last Tuesday. The officers took the opportunity to engage with young children, celebrating black excellence by sharing stories that emphasize the achievements and contributions of Black individuals in history, according to the Boston Police Department's news blog.

Not only was the event intended to educate but it also aimed to closely connect the police department with the community. It served to foster a relationship of trust and respect between the officers and the young citizens they swore to protect. "They shared stories that celebrate Black Excellence, inspiring young minds through the power of literature," the BPD report detailed.

The BCE's outreach is a component of the broader community policing efforts that aim to consistently build bridges between the BPD and residents of all ages.

Black History Month, observed every February, provides a platform for these outreach initiatives to gain additional momentum, allowing officers to actively participate in the communal recognition of historical figures and their stories.
