Motorists in Atlanta got more heat than they bargained for when a fire erupted under a Buford Highway bridge late yesterday morning, sending smoke billowing and halting traffic in its tracks. According to the FOX 5 Atlanta, the blaze was severe enough to shut down southbound lanes, with the Brookhaven Police Department advising drivers to steer clear of the area after posting an alert at 11:11 a.m.
Visibility was low as heavy smoke engulfed the vicinity, a regular occurrence when flames take hold of the homeless encampments often nestled beneath these city bridges—a detail not missed in reports. As fire officials scrutinized the bridge's stability, the highway was put on a temporary lockdown, with Brookhaven PD barricading the 2600 block of Buford Highway near Lenox Road, as per the release.
An all-clear was eventually signaled. At 2:51 p.m., per Brookhaven PD, and again at 3 p.m. by the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), as noted by a report by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Roads reopened, restoring the arterial flow of traffic, much to the relief of delayed commuters.
The origins of the fire are still under active determination, with Atlanta fire spokeswoman Alyssa Richardson confirming the involvement of an additional engine brought in to extinguish the combustive chaos. GDOT's assessment of the overpass, important for ensuring the safe continuity of passage, remains unpublished. "Officers responded to the area to assist and keep motorists safe on the highway," a police spokesperson said, highlighting the commitment to public safety amid unforeseen disruptions.
