BURNSVILLE – A somber pall descended over a local community today as a man opened fire, fatally wounding two police officers and a firefighter/paramedic, while injuring another officer. The deadly incident unfolded in the early morning and has since sent ripples of grief through the town., as reported by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety.
The individuals who were killed had begun their day with the intent to earnestly serve and protect their community. They kissed their loved ones goodbye, unaware that it would be for the last time. "When public safety officials choose this career they know it is one of sacrifice – where they'll be asked to put their lives on the line in service to others," read the statement provided by DPS Commissioner Bob Jacobson. "Yet they don their uniforms, kiss their families goodbye, and show up at work ready to protect the people in the communities they serve," according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety's Facebook page.
The tragedy has compelled an outpouring of support for local law enforcement and emergency services. Commissioner Jacobson's statement further expressed solidarity with the survivors and those mourning the fallen, "When our brothers and sisters in law enforcement and EMS put on their uniforms for their next shift, I want them to know they have our support and gratitude. We stand by you. We know the sacrifices you make to keep us safe."
