An Owatonna sex offender, whose vile plot to murder and inflict further sexual abuse was cut short by a bust at a bus stop, has issued a guilty plea. Michael Lee Kurkowski, 28, faced the music in federal court on Monday, copping to producing child pornography and conveying heinous threats across state lines to harm his prior sexual abuse victim and her family, , as  reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Minnesota.

Originally snagged by Pennsylvania law enforcement in March 2021, Kurkowski was laying low after being nailed for sexploiting a minor, for which he did a stint of 142 days behind bars followed by probation. As noted by court records, Kurkowski's probation conditions forbade him from contacting his victim, bearing arms, or pulling any stunts that might spell danger for others.

An FBI tip-off on February 4, 2022, triggered a rapid takedown, halting Kurkowski mid-journey with a bus ticket to terror, bound for Harrisburg. Nabbed at a Toledo, Ohio, bus stop, he was loaded down with a grisly kit – cuffs, a taser, knife, and other sinister tools of his thwarted trade. U.S. District Court Judge Joan N. Ericksen heard Kurkowski's guilty plea to the ghastly charges lain before him, with sentencing still on the docket, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office, District of Minnesota.

In a deeply disturbing case that spanned multiple states, a patchwork of law enforcement including the FBI, Owatonna Police, and numerous out-of-state departments, stitched together the bid to bring Kurkowski to justice. Assistants to the U.S. Attorney, Chelsea A. Walcker and Laura M. Provinzino, are named as the prosecuting attorneys on record.
