Traffic in Marin County continues to face disruption as a massive sinkhole on State Route 131, also known as Tiburon Boulevard, forces engineers and officials to jump into action. The sinkhole, which emerged at the intersection with Stewart Drive, has shut down a section of the busy roadway, leaving residents and commuters to grapple with detours and traffic jams.

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has been working diligently to repair the sinkhole, which appeared following a period of heavy rainfall that wreaked havoc across the Bay Area. According to a Hoodline report, the gaping cavity has led to significant disruption. In response, Caltrans has vowed to secure contractors to repair the damage as swiftly as possible.

As noted in a tweet from Caltrans District 4, intermittent one-way traffic control with flaggers will be utilized from Feb. 5 to Feb. 9, between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., to allow workers to conduct repairs safely. Additionally, both directions of SR-131 will see a traffic shift to accommodate these efforts. "Intermittent one-way traffic control with flaggers may be needed between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. for workers to safely finish the work," the update read. The sinkhole was a result of storm damage in late January.

Residents should expect some delays and are advised to seek alternative routes until the area is deemed safe. The Stewart Drive crosswalk also remains closed owing to the storm damage and subsequent sinkhole, further complicating travel for pedestrians. Changeable messages and directional signs have been placed, aiming to assist motorists navigating the area.
