High drama unfolded at a Carlsbad gas station yesterday when a stolen car triggered a police pursuit that ended with a foot chase and two suspects in custody. The Carlsbad Police Department reported that Officer Gruel received an alert from a license plate reader and subsequently located the stolen vehicle. When Officer Gruel attempted to detain the suspects, they bolted in the car, leading to a high-speed chase, detailed in a statement on the department's Facebook page.
The chase was short-lived, though, as the suspects soon ditched the car on the freeway and continued their escape on foot. In a nail-biting turn of events, Officer Gruel heroically jumped into the moving vehicle, forgotten in gear by the fleeing suspects and shifted it into park, a move that prevented further danger on the busy road. Meanwhile, the suspects, speeding onto the freeway, thought they had evaded capture.
However, Officers Monahan, Puliafico, and Lin were hot on the heels of the fleeing suspects, finding them trying to conceal themselves in some nearby bushes. The Facebook post from the City of Carlsbad Police Department detailed the efforts of the officers who took the suspects into custody without further incident.
Following the apprehension, it was determined that one of the individuals was a juvenile. The young suspect was released to their parents, with charges filed with the juvenile court. The other individual, having been found hiding in a nearby bush by the officers, was arrested and booked into jail on charges of vehicle theft and resisting arrest. The car was safely returned to its owner in a happy resolution for the victim.
