Sheriff Levon Allen has indicated that his office has heard from several people who have been approached by fraudsters claiming to be bonding agents, federal agents, or deputy sheriffs, who coerce them into paying to remove warrants or to bail someone out of jail, as per a report from FOX 5 Atlanta.
According to a social media alert issued by Allen's office, these criminals are implementing advanced tactics, including "spoofed" phone calls, which falsely display the sheriff's office as the source of the call and insisting on payments, the authenticity is further feigned by requesting payments through modern apps and platforms, such as CashApp, Zelle, GooglePay, and a basket of others but the sheriff's office has made it crystal clear that they never conduct financial transactions over the phone nor through these mediums; this was bolstered by a similar announcement echoed by the sheriff on The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
"It's important to note that the Clayton County Sheriff's Office will NEVER solicit payments over the phone, nor will we request payments through platforms such as CashApp, Zelle, GooglePay, Apple Pay, Venmo, or gift cards," the sheriff's office cautioned on social media, the statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta emphasizes the gravity of the situation and the need for vigilance among residents.
The Sheriff's Office advised those who believe they might be dealing with a scammer, especially calls related to jury duty that request payment, to hang up immediately and verify the information by contacting the Clayton County Sheriff directly to safeguard against being hoodwinked, if personal information is solicited by these scammers the sheriff warns it is paramount that no personal details are imparted and that residents should not only dismiss the calls but also report the incident promptly to the sheriff's office, this guidance they reiterated in order to combat the rise of these fraudulent maneuvers which has been stressed as a growing concern for the community.
