A tragic twist unfolded in Cobb County this week as authorities clarified the events leading to a motorcyclist's death and a bicyclist's serious injuries, no longer suspecting a hit-and-run incident. According to FOX 5 Atlanta, police initially believed a black SUV was involved in leaving the scene after hitting the bicyclist and spreading debris that caused the motorcyclist's fatal crash.
However, the investigation has now revealed a different sequence of events. On Tuesday night, 32-year-old bicyclist Melissa Winslow from Marietta was trying to cross Veterans Memorial Highway at Puckett Drive when her path was crossed by tragedy. She was struck by a motorcycle, propelling her and the bike into the center lane, where, it appears the motorcycle hit the bicycle, knocking it into the encounter with an SUV. The SUV driver, after ensuring nothing else was struck, drove away without committing a crime; the focus now shifts away from the search for the vehicle initially thought to have fled the scene.
On the opposite side of the road, WSB-TV reports, 38-year-old Christopher Johnson of Mableton was eastbound on his 2008 Harley Davidson when he encountered the bicycle debris, leading to a loss of control and a fatal collision with the curb. This catastrophe declared Johnson deceased at the scene, an abrupt end to what began as a routine commute.
The aftermath was a scene of sorrow and flashing lights: Winslow was rushed to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with life-threatening injuries, her condition a piercing reminder of the fragility of life on bustling roadways.
