Convicted Drug Trafficker Sentenced to 40 Months for Illegal Re-Entry into U.S after Deportations

A Mexican national with a history of drug trafficking and multiple deportations has been slapped with a 40-month prison sentence for once again illegally crossing into the United States, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Laredo, Texas announced. Gabino Escamilla, a 43-year-old convicted felon, had previously pled guilty on November 8, 2023, to the charge of illegal re-entry after deportation.

According to a statement from U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani, U.S. District Judge Micaela Alvarez handed down the sentence, which is set to be followed by yet another removal proceeding. Escamilla's criminal background includes a 2016 conviction in Columbus, Ohio, for conspiracy to distribute over five kilograms of cocaine. His footprints across the border are well-documented, having been ordered to quickly leave the U.S. soil seven times from 2010 to his last deportation in 2019.

Escamilla's latest run-in with law enforcement occurred on August 30, 2023, when he was apprehended near the city of Laredo. With this sentencing, he is expected to remain in federal custody pending his transfer to an as-yet-undetermined U.S. Bureau of Prisons facility.

The case, which underscores the ongoing challenges of border security and immigration enforcement, was investigated by Border Patrol. Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Terence A. Check Jr. led the prosecution efforts. As it stands now, the man who has attempted to defy the borders of a nation not his own, finds himself bound once again by its laws — a repeat offender caught in a cycle that has now culminated in a stiff federal prison term.
