In a notification effort to protect consumers from potential bill shock, internet service providers are mandated to send out three written bulletins alerting beneficiaries before the proverbial plug is pulled. The first heads-up would be dispatched by January 25. The sequence would follow with a second notification sent out in mid-March, 15 days after the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) pronounces the program's final month, followed by a third during the last discounted billing cycle, according to the City of Dallas.
The FCC is putting a freeze on new enrollment as of February 8, bracing for an orderly wind-down. "Protection From Bill Shock" measures have been emphasized, requiring users' acknowledgment of their commitment to pay undiscounted rates post-ACP, according to the same government communique. This gesture towards transparency seeks to make clear the financial commitment required of users as the program fades, and the price of connectivity returns to its unsubsidized state.
Resources flow from the FCC to assist those curious about or struggling with the transition. The USAC ACP Support Center, reachable at 877-384-2575, becomes a beacon for updates, while inquiries and complaints can funnel through filing an informal complaint at the FCC, sending an email to [email protected], or dialing into the American Sign Language (ASL) Hotline at 844-432-2275 for the Deaf or Hard of Hearing. With the spotlight waning on the ACP, Dallas officials are calling upon community partners to help disseminate information about the program's conclusion to ensure that residents are not left in the digital dark.
