Justice is now in the gears for the family of Marando Salmon, the 37-year-old man shot and killed by DeKalb County police officers in 2022, in an announcement made by District Attorney Sherry Boston. A grand jury has indicted former DeKalb County Police Officer Russell Mathis and current officer Jordan Vance, as confirmed by FOX 5 Atlanta. Mathis faces felony involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct charges, while Vance has been indicted on a reckless conduct charge.
Unfolding the preceding events after a call about a stolen vehicle, the officers arrived at the Autumn Crest Court residence. According to 11Alive, Vance knocked on the door, which swung open, leading the officers inside. Going upstairs, Mathis encountered Salmon seated in darkness on his bed and allegedly shot him within seconds of their meeting. This confrontation was sparked as Mathis mistook a thrown cellphone for a knife.
At the press conference, Boston emphasized the tragic loss of a life. "A life has been lost, and for that, I extend my deepest sympathies to Mr. Salmon's loved ones," she said. The swift act of indictment is a reminder of the weight carried when officers' decisions become matters of life and death. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation initially reported that Salmon was reaching for a gun, however, this was later corrected, stating that he did not touch the firearm. Despite this miscommunication, it was established that while Salmon owned a gun lawfully, it was holstered and not within reach at the time of the incident.
Both Mathis and Vance are expected to surrender to the DeKalb County Jail shortly. Mathis' bond has been set at $8,000, and Vance's bond remains at $3,000, with conditions that neither may contact the victim’s family or each other. During the incident, despite being in his own bedroom and unarmed, Salmon's sudden demise brings forth acute questions on the use of lethal force and the repercussions that follow. Salmon's family attended the announcement, silently bearing his image as the district attorney spoke.
The legal proceedings will continue as the case is assigned to a judge and slated for trial. As of yet, there has been no response from the police department to inquiries made by 11Alive. The community, however, awaits with the family of Marando Salmon for the tides of justice to unfold fully in this case that has caused ripples far beyond the confines of Autumn Crest Court.
