A Detroit man, Lavonte Sampson, 39, faced his days in court and ended up being convicted by a federal jury on severe charges involving sex trafficking of a minor and producing child pornography, per announcements made by U.S. Attorney Dawn N. Ison and reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office. The verdict came swiftly after a five-day trial and about two hours of jury deliberation, according to federal court records.
The deep dive into Sampson's criminal activities began when the FBI's Southeast Michigan Trafficking and Exploitation Crimes Task Force was conducting an undercover operation which led to the recovery of a missing 15-year-old girl, during which her cellphone unveiled Facebook messages showing Sampson recruiting her for commercial sex work, as detailed in a Detroit Free Press report. He was then accused of taking explicit photos of her, advertising her services online, and even sexually exploiting her himself, and he didn't stop there because he also secretly recorded a sexual act with her and went as far as to send these recordings to an undercover agent.
In statements obtained by the Detroit Free Press, U.S. Attorney Dawn Ison condemned Sampson's actions, declaring, "This defendant exploited a vulnerable child, he sold her body to other men for his own personal gain," emphasizing that tackling human trafficking, particularly involving children, remains a high priority and that the team is committed to using "every tool in our arsenal to battle the sexual exploitation of vulnerable victims in our communities" and ensure predators are met with justice. Sampson now faces a grim future with a mandatory minimum of 15 years behind bars, and possibly up to a life sentence, with sentencing set for May 8.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Cheyvoryea Gibson also weighed in on the case highlighting the FBI's dedication to protecting children and bringing predators to justice as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office press release, and while the focus is often on the perpetrators, authorities remain vigilant to ensure victims are identified and recovered, and Gibson urges the public to report any suspicions or knowledge of crimes of this harrowing nature to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children at 1-800-THE-LOST or via report.cybertip.org. This case serves as another stark reminder of the atrocities committed against children, even as Human Trafficking Prevention Month comes to an end signaling an ongoing struggle against such inhumanities.
