The City of Detroit is on the hunt for some new cultural figureheads, and this time they're seeking nominations for the Detroit Poet Laureate and Detroit Composer Laureate. Whoever lands the prestigious roles will be tasked with enriching the city's artistic and cultural scene, adding to the City's ongoing efforts to honor and grow its creative community, according to the City of Detroit.

Funded by the generous pockets of the Ford Foundation, these positions aim to pair the city's commitment to historical and cultural excellence with the vitality of Detroit's talent. The move was heralded by Mayor Mike Duggan as part of Detroit's rebirth and celebrated the joining of these roles with the City's Official Historian, Jamon Jordan. "As Detroit continues to come back, we are making it a priority to create beauty along the way," Duggan declared, emphasizing the significance of spoken word and musical compositions in the city's resurgence, as per the City of Detroit.

Detroit's previous Poet Laureate, the late Naomi Madgett Long, set a high benchmark for the position. Her legacy will see an honorary nod at a special event in downtown Detroit. As a new iteration of the role, the appointed Poet Laureate will create poems for special events and aim to make poetry more accessible to Detroiters, particularly the youth. According to the outlined requirements, candidates will need to have a confirmed history in poetry, with at least one full-length book to their name and a decade's experience in the field.

On the musical front, the Detroit Composer Laureate will be an advocate for the city's diverse musical community, fostering educational opportunities and inspiring the next generation of Detroit musicians. The appointee will have the responsibility to challenge local composers and collaborate on projects, symbolizing and perpetuating the city's renowned musical tradition. The ideal candidate must be a Detroit resident, possess a significant catalog of compositions, and have at least ten years of experience in crafting published music. Lacey Holmes from the ACE office is the point of contact for submitting nominations by the March 15 deadline.

In the words of Rochelle Riley, the city’s Director of Arts and Culture, "This position- and the laureates – are some of the most important Mayor Mike Duggan has appointed and speaks to how much this administration values history and culture and the contributions of Detroiters to American history." These appointments underscore an ongoing recognition of Detroit's influential legacy in arts and the broader cultural fabric of America. The mayor will select the laureates from a slate brought forth by a community judging panel, as cited by the City of Detroit.
