Tensions flared on Piedmont Avenue last month, as a fire broke out in an Atlanta high-rise, leading to dozens of evacuations and several cases of smoke inhalation. The Atlanta Fire Rescue Department responded to the blaze at 215 Piedmont Avenue NE on the evening of January 17, after receiving calls shortly after 6 p.m. According to reports, firefighters arrived at a working fire on the first floor, which had spread to the second floor of the residential building.
The fire necessitated an upgrade to a second alarm as it consumed parts of the residential edifice, and during this turmoil, smoke infiltrated up to the third and fourth floors, the situation tense as first responders fought to contain the chaos. Residents on upper levels were instructed to remain where they were while around 50 individuals were guided to temporary safety within the confines of a MARTA bus. Among those affected, six were treated for the miasma they inhaled, and one individual's condition was serious enough to warrant transportation to medical facilities.
The fire department has yet to pinpoint what set off the incident.
