On the solemn anniversary of a tragic event, the Duluth Police Department remembered one of their fallen. Three years ago, to this day, K9 Luna made the ultimate sacrifice when gunfire erupted at a domestic disturbance call. The incident unfolded as enforcement officials, seeking to defuse a volatile situation where a suspect stubbornly resisted detainment, released K9 Luna to assist. The action took a heartbreaking turn as the suspect fired upon Luna, ending the beloved dog's watch on February 25, 2021.
The memory of K9 Luna's service continues to resonate within the department and the community she served, as evident by a recent social media acknowledgment by the Duluth Police. "3 years ago today Duluth Police K9 Luna was shot and killed after responding to a domestic disturbance where a male subject refused to surrender," the department posted on X, the brevity of the message belied the depth of the bond between K9 officers and their human counterparts.

K9 Luna's end of watch, or EOW, is a term often reserved for human officers, but in Luna's case, it marks the reverence held for all members of the force, regardless of breed. The canine's sacrifice brought into sharp focus the dangers law enforcement officers — two-legged and four-legged — face in their daily duties.
