Last Saturday, the gymnasium pulsated with intensity as the Eastside Catholic boys' basketball team trampled West Seattle with an 87-62 victory to secure the Sea-King District title for the second year in a row. The Crusaders, who sat at ninth rank prior to the game, proved that their previous four-game losing streak was a mere hiccup on their path to dominance, according to a report by SI.com High School.
In a game that avenged a prior loss to West Seattle, Eastside Catholic's center Yabi Aklog, alongside Jacob Cofie and Kayden Greene, propelled their team to an early lead that set the tone for the rest of the evening. Combining for a whopping 17 points in the opening frame, they established a dominance that the Wildcats struggled to match, Seattle Medium reported. The Wildcats, led by sharpshooter Alex Pierce, were hoping to keep the scoreboard ticking in their favor but faced a hard reality with a halftime score of 45-27 in favor of Eastside.
With the second half underway, Eastside Catholic continued to steamroll their way through, further inflating the gap with guard Dash Lamebull-Ingram delivering an early three-pointer. By the end of the third, the Crusaders had ballooned their lead to an insurmountable 71-49, reported by BVM Sports. This did little to stifle West Seattle's resolve; players like Brittin Joyner and Bo Gionet still fought hard to tally points in the fourth quarter.
Forward Jacob Cofie, who netted a game-high 24 points, captured the spotlight with an exceptional offensive display that punctuated the Crusaders' victory. "Staying focused, we have to key in and focus on the small things as those things win championships, and defense wins championships," Cofie told Seattle Medium in a statement that underscored the team's laser-like focus on the prize ahead.
Despite their defeat, West Seattle exhibited a level of grit that suggests a pronounced potential for future tournaments. After their unexpected run to the district championship, it's clear they're set to make further inroads into the state competition, reflecting a message of resilience and ongoing improvement.
At the helm of Eastside Catholic's skilled roster, Coach Brent Merritt reveled in the win but made it clear there's more work on the horizon. In a statement obtained by SI.com High School, Merritt expressed his forward-looking mindset: "I’m excited about the win, but our job is not done. We’re still thinking about the dome." With eyes set on state championships and the Tacoma Dome on the horizon, the Crusaders are a team on a mission, with no intention of slowing down their charge any time soon.
