A man died early Sunday morning after a shooting at South 124th Street and Langston Street in Skyway, and as of the latest update, no suspects have been arrested. King County sheriff's deputies responded to reports of gunfire at about 12:40 a.m., only to find the victim already dead at the scene.
According to FOX 13 Seattle, fire department medics attempted to provide aid to the victim, but he did not survive. The King County Sheriff's Office, which provided the information for the report, said Major Crimes detectives are now leading the homicide investigation. The King County Medical Examiner's Office has not yet released the victim's identity or cause of death.
A Familiar Pattern of Overnight Violence
This is not the first deadly shooting to hit Skyway this year. Just months earlier, on April 1, a fatal shooting at Creston Point Apartments on Martin Luther King Jr. Way South left one man dead and another injured, as Hoodline reported in an earlier Skyway shooting story. Less than two weeks after that, on April 14, deputies responded to another pre-dawn shooting near South 117th Street and 85th Avenue South that sent a victim to Harborview Medical Center, according to Hoodline's coverage of that pre-dawn Skyway shooting.
Skyway is an unincorporated community wedged between the city limits of Seattle, Renton, and Tukwila, which means it falls under the direct jurisdiction of the King County Sheriff's Office rather than any single city police department. Law enforcement coverage in the area is assigned to the sheriff's Southwest Precinct 4, which maintains a community storefront at 12629 Renton Avenue South in Skyway, per the King County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators Bring County-Wide Resources to the Case
The Major Crimes Unit now handling the investigation is made up of two sergeants and 12 detectives who specialize in homicides, felony assaults, and robberies across unincorporated King County, according to the King County Sheriff's Office. That same unit investigated a fatal shooting in July 2025 on South 133rd Street in Skyway, in which a resident shot and killed an alleged intruder in her driveway — a case where deputies ultimately concluded the individuals involved knew each other, as KING 5 News reported at the time.
Skyway's history of gun violence extends beyond fatal shootings involving residents. In August 2024, an 18-year-old man was sentenced to six years in prison after pleading guilty to firing an AK-47 at a parked King County Sheriff's Office deputy in Skyway back in November 2021, according to the Kent Reporter. Deputies said the round was fired at a patrol vehicle parked on the side of the road.
A Community Pressing for More Patrols
Skyway's public safety challenges are tied in part to its status as an unincorporated pocket of the county without its own police force. The Bryn Mawr-Skyway census-designated place covers 2.85 square miles and has a population of 18,023, with a poverty rate of 13.3 percent — higher than King County's overall average of 8.6 percent, according to 2026 U.S. Census Bureau data published by World Population Review.
In a 2021 King County public safety engagement initiative, residents in urban unincorporated areas including Skyway cited a strong need for increased deputy presence to address slow emergency response times. That concern has lingered even as county infrastructure projects move forward nearby; King County Road Services has scheduled a pavement replacement and safety improvement project along South 124th Street and 68th Avenue South, set to begin construction this summer.
For now, the investigation into Sunday's shooting remains open, with detectives working to determine what led to the gunfire and whether the case connects to any of the earlier violence that has repeatedly touched this stretch of Skyway. The Medical Examiner's Office has yet to release the victim's name or cause of death, and no suspects have been identified or arrested.
