In a remarkable feat of telecommunications, the calm and collected voice of an Eaton County 911 dispatcher, Kayelee Cavender, became the lifeline for a family welcoming a new member. During a Valentine’s Day emergency, Cavender successfully walked a panicked caller through a home birth, marking the second time she has helped deliver a baby via phone. Cavender acknowledged it was the family's resilience that led to the joyous outcome. "The baby is coming," began the urgent call, as reported by WOOD TV8.
Within moments of the call, the situation rapidly progressed, with the mother’s aunt informing Cavender that the baby was crowning. The dispatcher provided instructions on how to check the newborn’s breathing, ensuring the little girl’s entrance into the world was as safe as could be over the phone line. After tense silence, the baby's cries were heard, signaling relief. "To hear the relief in her voice when I asked and to know that her baby was OK – I think was the most beneficial part," Cavender told WLNS.
In a similar stroke of serendipity, a Genesee County 911 dispatcher, Mia Guzman, also became an unexpected midwife, aiding in a baby's delivery over the phone on a recent Friday night. Despite the rarity of such occurrences, as noted by Dispatch Supervisor Adrienne Roberts in an interview with ABC12, Guzman showcased professionalism and confidence that contributed to a healthy and happy birth. "There are people who go their whole careers without helping to deliver a child over the phone," said Roberts, highlighting the rarity of such calls.
Miracles often happen when least expected, and in Eaton County, these moments are commemorated on a "Tree of Life" art installation at the 911 Center. Cavender had the honor to add the Valentine’s Day call to the tree, alongside her first assisted delivery from 2020. Officials have confirmed that in both instances, the mothers and babies were in good health. Across Michigan, it seems 911 dispatchers are lending more than just crisis intervention; they're providing a guiding voice in the genesis of life itself.
