Expedia Group has taken the drastic step of closing its Seattle headquarters for a three-day security overhaul. This comes after former employee Marcelo F. Vargas-Fernandez, 42, was charged with four counts of voyeurism for allegedly placing spy cameras in the company's all-gender restrooms. According to GeekWire, Vargas-Fernandez pleaded not guilty during his arraignment in King County Superior Court.
The privacy breach was reported by Expedia employees, who spotted suspicious devices in December 2023 and January 2024. Initially, security personnel mistook the devices for music players or soap dispenser batteries. However, once the true nature of the devices came to light, the Expedia leadership team took immediate action. An internal memo revealed that the company commenced "an internal investigation immediately," "reported the incident to the Seattle Police Department that week," and engaged an external investigation team, as detailed in reporting by MyNorthwest.
Subsequent sweeps by both Expedia security and the Seattle Police Department turned up no additional recording devices. In a statement obtained by GeekWire, an Expedia Group spokesperson confirmed the findings and emphasized the company's ongoing efforts to enhance security protocols, including multiple daily bathroom checks.
The broader Expedia community has reacted with support for the company's handling of the incident, Expedia has not only increased on-site security measures but also provided support services to employees, including counseling and victim assistance. According to Tacoma Encounter, the actions taken aim to "restore confidence among Expedia employees" and serve as an example for the importance of prioritizing privacy and security in the workplace. CEO Peter Kern has been open in his communication throughout the ordeal, strengthening communal ties within the company in the face of adversity.
As Expedia Group marches on towards a fortified future, the temporary closure of its headquarters stands as a precautionary testament to the unforeseen perils lurking within the corners of corporate America. The unsettling discovery that has led to rigorous security enhancements also poses a reminder, that the sanctity of personal boundaries within professional realms is not immune to violation, and vigilance is a perennial necessity.
