The untimely death of 32-year-old Brittany Anderson in Galveston County Jail has raised a storm of questions and cries for justice from her family. Anderson, who was found dead in her cell on the first of February, had been in custody for alleged assault on a public servant. The Galveston County Sheriff's Office reported that jail and medical staff found her unresponsive in a padded cell, administering CPR before she was rushed to the hospital with a pulse.
Anderson's family, however, is grieving not just her loss but also the manner in which the events unfolded. They told KTRK, "If y'all would have just reached out like y'all were supposed to, we would have been able to be there for that," expressing distress over not being immediately informed of her emergency transfer to the University of Texas Medical Branch, where she was pronounced dead. The call they received was from UTMB, by which time, it was tragically too late.
The incident and subsequent lack of immediate communication have spurred accusations of mishandling. Further intensifying the family's suspicions, they have now demanded to see video footage from inside the jail to ascertain the events leading up to her death. "She was still a sister. She was still a mother. She was still a daughter. She was still a cousin. She was still a friend. She still mattered, whether she was on drugs, whether she was sick, whether she was ill, her life still mattered," Anderson's cousin Jarnae McGaskey forcefully told KTRK in an interview, highlighting the human element often disregarded when the deceased's past is less than unblemished.
While the official cause of death remains under investigation, the family is calling the situation a murder, a term that carries the weight of accusation and demands for retribution. According to FOX 26 Houston, she was arrested for assault of a public servant just the day before her death was confirmed.
