San Antonio's early risers were met with the sight of smoke as firefighters worked to subdue a blaze at a home under renovation in the heart of the city's East Side. The incident unfolded around 4 a.m. when emergency crews rushed to the 600 block of S. Hackberry Street, an area that's just a stone's throw from downtown. According to KENS 5, the fire began near the kitchen on the house's backside before hungrily climbing its way to the attic.
Fire teams were quick to spring into action, managing to quickly extinguish the flames, preventing what could have rapidly escalated to engulf the structure fully. "When crews arrived, they were able to extinguish the fire quickly," reported KENS 5. Gauging the situation, officials noticed the home was in the midst of renovations, though it was unclear when the property last played host to workers.
An added twist to the ordeal had neighbors and responders on edge as locals knocked on the door to check for potential victims. The gesture led to initial concerns that individuals might have been trapped inside. However, officials confirmed that the house was empty at the time of the fire. This information was corroborated by Fox San Antonio, emphasizing the absence of residents during the unfortunate event.
No injuries were reported, whether civilian or amongst the brave firefighters. The cause of the fire remains under active investigation as officials sift through the scene to uncover what kindled the unwanted blaze. "Nobody was home at the time of the fire," reiterated Fox San Antonio. As the investigation continues to unfold, local residents are reminded to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity, especially in and around construction or renovation sites, where fires can too often find their fuel.
