After over a decade of distinguished service to the community, Fort Worth's most renowned four-legged municipal worker is hanging up his collar for a well-deserved rest. Henry, the beloved spokespup of Fort Worth Animal Care & Control, is set to retire on February 23, according to the City of Fort Worth.
Henry's story starts back in 2011 when he was rescued in rough shape and given a second chance by city staff including Code Compliance Director Brandon Bennett who spotted the pooch at the Chuck and Brenda Silcox Animal Shelter, they worked tirelessly to nurse him back to health and in turn, Henry became more than just a mascot - he became a symbol of hope and perseverance for the homeless pets in the city. As Bennett's loyal companion now, the pair is slated to retire together, marking the end of an era for both of them and the community that has come to know and cherish Henry's presence.
Throughout his career, Henry wasn't just a furry face. He actively engaged with Fort Worth's residents, participating in numerous special events and even joining former Mayor Betsy Price on educational outreach visits to local elementary schools. His charm and charisma went a long way in raising awareness about the plight of his fellow shelter animals in need of loving homes.
In a remarkable testament to his influence a collective of generous donors rallied behind Henry's cause culminating in over $1 million raised for the construction of a new medical treatment ward at the shelter where he started his journey, this facility, opened in 2014, has since played a crucial role in providing advanced care to countless animals, strengthening the city's commitment to the wellbeing of its most vulnerable four-legged residents.
As Henry steps into retirement, Fort Worth Animal Care & Control and the city's residents are expressing their deep appreciation for the "exceptionally good boy" and his service.
